Father and son charged with possession of contraband cigarettes

GEORGE TOWN: A father and son were charged at the magistrate's court today for possession of imported contraband cigarettes valued at RM15,213.20.
Seeni Bazarudeen Abdul Haq, 45 and his father Abdul Haq Abdul Ghany, 71, claimed trial to having in their possession 186,720 sticks of contraband cigarettes of various brands at Senirina Enterprise at Blk 7A-1-2, Desa Intan, Lebuh Raya Thean Teik, 1500 Ayer Itam, Penang.
Both men who run a sundry shop were jointly charged for the offence.
The duo were charged under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967 and are liable to be fined a minimum of RM152,132 or a jail term of not more than three years, or both, or fined a maximum of RM304,264 if convicted.
Customs prosecuting officer Siti Nurfirziatul Fazliani Mohd Zain proposed bail of RM10,000 each for both men.
Magistrate Jamaliah Abd Manap, however, set bail at RM6,000 each with one surety for each of the accused.
Both father and son were represented by defence counsel Dato' K. Supramaniam.
Jamaliah then fixed March 13 for mention.
