Two policemen charged with bribery

SEREMBAN: Two policemen pleaded not guilty in the sessions court here today to three charges of accepting a bribe, totaling RM10,000, four years ago.
Corporal Mohd Fairuz Abd Jalil, 37, and Constable Norfazlizan Mat Zain, 34, made the plea before judge Fathiyah Idris.
They were charged with jointly accepting RM3,000, RM5,000 and RM2,000 on three occasions from a businessman, Chan Heng Loy, 63, as an inducement for them to not take action against him for allegedly selling smuggled cigarettes in Taman Kiara, Sikamat, Seremban.
The offence was allegedly committed at three locations, namely Sikamat police station, besides the Seven Eleven Convenience Store in Taman Sri Pulai, Sikamat, and at Pangsapuri Markisa, Berek Balai Polis Sikamat , at 7.30 pm dan 7.40pm on Dec 7, 2014 and at 4.20 pm on Dec 31, 2014, respectively.
Mohd Fairuz and Norfazlizan, both attached at the Sikamat police station, were charged under Section 17(a) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, which provides an imprisonment for up to 20 years and fine of not less than five times of the value of the bribe, or RM10,000, whichever is higher, if found guilty.
The court allowed them bail of RM15,000 each in one surety for all charges.
Deputy public prosecutor from MACC Nurdiyanah Mohd Nawawi prosecuted, while Mohd Fairuz was represented by lawyer Mohd Haijan Omar.
