Facebook boost for beef noodle soup

PENDANG (Kedah): A Facebook post has given an unexpected boost to the beef noodle soup business that Che Mah Abdullah runs at her home in Kampung Paya Kerchut here.
The 62-year-old sells a bowl of 'bihun' (noodle) soup with an "abundance" of beef for just RM5, and is now drawing patrons from as far as Perlis, Penang and Perak.
The business, operated at the front of her house, has been going since 1981 but became widely known after a patron uploaded a photograph of the stall onto Facebook in July last year.
The 'Bihun Sup Daging Segenggam', made with a recipe created by Che Mah's husband Md Salleh Nayan, 63, has not stopped bringing in the customers since.
Che Mah said the economic uncertainty did not prevent her from providing ample portions of beef with the noodle soup.
"I feel the customers must have their fill. So, I do not hesitate to provide much beef with the noodle soup. The important thing is that they feel that they are getting their money's worth and then make some positive comments.
"I am able to sell the produce at a low price because I do not pay rent or additional bills for the stall in the front of my house," she said.
Before the noodle soup became famous via Facebook, Che Mah had six tables for the customers but now there are not enough seats to go round, especially on the weekends and during school holidays.
"There is also not enough space for parking cars and customers have to wait in a queue. Sales have breached RM2,000 a day," she said, adding that she prepared over 100 kg of beef to be served each day and cooked the soup in four large pots.
Che Mah said the overwhelming response had forced her to employ 10 workers for the business which begins at noon and goes on to the evening daily except on Friday.
A patron, Affendi Abu Bakar, 42, said he and his wife, Adinawati Adnan, 37, came from Kulim, Kedah, just to have the noodle soup.
"This is the second time that we have come after seeing the Facebook post. Rarely do we find noodle soup with so much beef, especially during the current economic situation," he said. — Bernama
