Manufacturing sales up 9.4% to RM67.3 billion in December 2017

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia's manufacturing sales soared 9.4% year-on-year to RM67.3 billion in December 2017 against RM61.5 billion reported in the same month a year ago.

The Department of Statistics said the significant increase in sales value was due to the increase in electrical and electronic products  (+9.3%); petroleum, chemical, rubber and plastic products  (+12.5%); and non-metallic mineral products, basic metal and fabricated metal products  (+6.8%). These three sub-sectors contributed 80.5% to the sales value of the manufacturing sector.

Total employees engaged in the manufacturing sector in December 2017 was 1.06 million persons, 2.4% higher than 1.03 million persons recorded in December 2016.

Salaries & wages paid rose 9.2% to RM3.77 billion, representing an average salaries & wages per employee of RM3,568 in December 2017.
Sales value per employee was up by 6.8% to RM63,597 as compared with the same month of the previous year.
