PASIR PUTEH: An RM8 million sports complex will be built for residents of the Pasir Puteh Parliamentary constituency near the Semerak Canal in Tok Bali here.
Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said the complex would be equipped with a variety of sports facilities, taking into account the needs and views of local leaders.
Without specifying any commencement date, he said the construction of the complex on a 6-hectare site would take between 12 and 18 months to complete.
Khairy was speaking to reporters after a Townhall programme with Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki at the Uthmaniyah Complex in Kampung Pulai Lima here today.
The programme, which was held in conjunction with 'Fiesta Sehati RTM @ AKOK 25', was also attended by Communications and Multimedia Ministry secretary-general Tan Sri Sharifah Zarah Syed Ahmad and Pasir Puteh Umno Division chief Datuk Zawawi Othman.
Khairy said the complex in Pasir Puteh was among 14 sports complexes announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak when tabling the 2018 Budget in Oct.
He said the complex was being built based on demand, especially from the younger generation who faced a lack of sports and leisure facilities in Kelantan.
In addition, he said Kelantan had never hosted the Malaysia Games before, as the Kelantan government had not submitted an application to organise the biennial sports competition.
Khairy, who is also Umno Youth chief said the ministry would strive to bring the games to Kelantan if Barisan Nasional was given the mandate to govern Kelantan in the 14th General Election.
Meanwhile, Asyraf Wajdi said a Darul Quran University was being considered to be built in Pasir Puteh.
He said this was based on the aspirations of the people, who wished to have experts in Qur'anic knowledge among other professional fields. — Bernama
