SPAD's campaign to make public transportation safer for women

KUALA LUMPUR: The Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) is collaborating with international organisations to raise awareness on gender neutrality when using public transportation.
SPAD Chief Executive Officer Mohd Azharuddin Mat Sah said they will launch a video called "Public Transport Is Not Gender Neutral: Bring the Light!" to spread awareness among commuters.
The video campaign is a collaboration with the International Association of Public Transport (UITP) and the World Bank and will be launched globally in conjunction with International Womens' Day which falls on March 8.
"SPAD is pleased to collaborate with this two great organisations to spread awareness on gender neutrality among commuters.
"Malaysia is very concerned about inclusiveness, and I'm glad we are taking this approach in spreading awareness on having a safe environment on public transportation," Azharuddin said after viewing the video.
The event is held in conjunction with the 9th World Urban Forum (WUF9) which aims to examine the most pressing issues faced by cities around the world.
The biennale event is a non-legislative technical forum which has been convened by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) since 2002.
WUF9 is hosted by the government through the Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT) with the theme "Cities 2030, Cities for all: Implementing the New urban Agenda".
According to a report by UITP, more than 80% of women experience sexual harassment on public transportation, 90% of which goes unreported.
The report added most women feel safer on the street than on public transportation.
The global campaign also urges the public to spread the awareness through social media via the hashtag #PT4ME (Public Transport 4 Me).
