GM among three supermarket staff nabbed for illegal sale of firecrackers

KUALA LUMPUR: The police detained three employees of a supermarket in Cheras last night for allegedly selling firecrackers without permit to customers in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebration.
The suspects comprising the supermarket's general manager, salesman and store keeper are aged between 25 and 50.
They are investigated under Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957 which carries a maximum jail term of seven years or a fine not exceeding RM10,000, or both.
Kuala Lumpur police chief, Datuk Seri Mazlan Lazim said in the 9.30pm raid, the police also seized various types of firecrackers and fireworks worth about RM50,000.
"It is an offence for any party to own and sell firecrackers and fireworks unless they possess the special licence issued by the police," he told reporters at the launch of 'Ops Selamat 12' at the Kuala Lumpur police contingent, here today.
On 'Ops Selamat 12', he said the police had identified 10 accident-prone areas in the federal capital, namely Jalan Kepong, Jalan Cheras, Jalan Tun Razak, Jalan Ipoh, Jalan Kuching, Jalan Ampang, Jalan Klang Lama, Jalan Duta, Sungai Besi and the Middle Ring Road 2 (MRR2).
At the event, Mazlan handed over 52 Kawasaki KLX 250 scramblers to police chiefs in the district for more effective crime prevention and patrols. — Bernama
