GEORGE TOWN: An Indonesian maid has passed away at the Bukit Mertajam district hospital while undergoing treatment after she was allegedly abused by her local employers.
She was apparently carrying wounds as a result of exposure to acid after she was brought in to the hospital by officers working with Bukit Mertajam MP Steven Sim Chee Keong earlier in this morning.
Hours later, she mysteriously passed away in the hospital despite showing signs that she seemed to be coping well in spite of her injuries.
Her employers a married couple, aged 39 and 36 respectively have been detained at their home on Saturday near Butterworth after a report was lodged.
Police are expected to produce them in court for a remand order later.
The maid, who was originally from Medan, Indonesia, suffered bruises and cuts from the apparent abuse that she endured although it was also learnt that the employer's version had claimed that the wounds were self-inflicted.
Sim's officers and the media were met by an unusual scene on Saturday when they arrived at the home where the victim was staying.
The victim who went by the name of Adelina was seated outside of her employer's house, and she would only nod her head when questions were posed to her, especially over whether she was in pain or, on which area she was abused.
Subsequently, a daughter of the couple came and took the maid to the central district police headquarters in Bukit Mertajam after she overheard about a report was lodged.
Central Seberang Prai district police head ACP Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid confirmed the case, and said that the police will probe the matter in light of the report that Adelina had passed on.
It was learnt that among the accusations of abuse made was that the maid had apparently slept in the car porch together with the dog for more than one month.
