Desa Petaling community protests against unknown development

KUALA LUMPUR: More than 150 tenants and business operators around the Desa Petaling business centre came out in solidarity to protest against a development which will be taking place on the last piece of green land in the neighbourhood.
Representing the group, MCA Public Services and Complaint Department head Datuk Seri Michael Chong told reporters that the affected individuals were shocked when a hoarding was suddenly put up last week at the 18,000 sq ft plot.
"To make matters worse, there isn't any notice or signboard near the hoarding nor was any survey conducted by the developer before that.
"At least what they can do is properly inform the people so that they can know what project is taking place," Chong said.
He added that upon checking with the land office, it was found that the land was privately owned by a company whose address is located in Ipoh and the land title said the plot was only meant for a bus and taxi stand.
Chong said the group is not against development in the area, they just want to be properly informed of what is taking place, considering the area is currently facing issues of congestion and insufficient parking.
Chong claimed that if some major project is scheduled to take place then it will further create more inconvenience for the existing tenants and business operators.
"By right, the developer should conduct a short survey with the affected stakeholders prior to putting up the hoarding to find out if development is really suitable at the area given its present stage and the effect of the development on the well-being and livelihood of the neighbourhood," he said.
Chong revealed that his lawyer will follow up on this matter with the local council on behalf of the affected stakeholders on what project is taking place, in the hopes of urging them to reconsider its approval if necessary.
