PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak today expressed his heartfelt gratitude towards the local Chinese community here for the role they played in nation-building.
In his 2018 Chinese New Year's message posted on his blog, the Prime Minister said Malaysian Chinese had contributed vastly to the culture and economy of the country since its independence in 1957.
"Indeed Malaysia is home to many, and all have played important role in building this great nation, especially our Chinese brothers and sisters as fellow sons and daughters of Malaysia.
"Their tremendous contribution is evident in every part of the country be it culturally or economically," he said.
Najib vowed to ensure that no Malaysians get left behind, that the future of the children would be better than that of the current generation, and that Malaysia would grow stronger and together as one.
"I hope that this Year of the Dog will bring prosperity and good health to you and your families and may we continue to be proud and committed to Negaraku, a country that we love," he said.
Najib also noted that the religious and cultural festivals here have become joyous occasions not just for any segments of the society, but that are celebrated by all.
"I believe it has been ingrained in us since Independence. We live harmoniously as one regardless of race and creed.
"It has become a way of life and this bond between us is what I believe to be the true spirit of 1Malaysia," he said, adding that it was the vast array of traditions and perspectives in Malaysia that made the country unique.
Najib also noted that the tradition of reunion during Chinese New Year, which has been practised from generation to generation for thousands of years, is indeed a respectable custom that symbolises the concept of coming together as one.
