Don't speculate over maid's death: Penang police

GEORGE TOWN: Penang police have refused to speculate over the alleged abuse by employers of an Indonesian maid who died last Sunday, as the results of a medical report into the case has yet to be released.
State police chief Datuk A. Thaiveegan said police could not confirm anything at the moment as it requires a post-mortem and medical reports which have yet to be finalised.
"We do not know how long it will take. Maybe one or two months," he said at a press conference today.
He said the maid's body had been handed over to the Indonesian consulate this morning for their purview while investigators hope investigation papers will be completed soon before being referred to the prosecution unit for further action.
So far, 19 statements from various individuals have been recorded, including neighbours, said Thaiveegan.
Adelina, 21, died at Bukit Mertajam district hospital while undergoing treatment after she was allegedly abused by her employers, who have since been detained.
Many relevant authorities including civil society groups view the incident seriously and have urged for the perpetrators to be brought to justice.
A 60-year-old woman and her son and daughter are all being remanded until Feb 19 to facilitate the probe which was classified under the Penal Code for murder.
On whether the three remanded have any mental records, Thaiveegan said police were still in the midst of its investigation, without elaborating further.
He also declined to be drawn into speculation that the maid was allegedly splashed with acid as the case is still under investigation.
Meanwhile, police are still searching for a local Chinese woman to assist in the case of the premix coffee which was believed to have been tampered with, causing the hospitalisation of individuals who consumed it.
Thaiveegan said the woman was still around and he hoped she could provide clues to the case.
