Malaysia makes initial pledge of US$100,000 to rebuild Iraq

KUWAIT CITY: Malaysia has announced an initial pledge of US$100,000 for the reconstruction of Iraq, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
"For many years, the Iraqi people have endured terrible trials and torments and have also experienced hardship as the battles against Daesh militant group have devastated the country.
"Malaysia realises the complex challenges faced by the Iraqi government, The needs can be far more critical than what we think. Therefore, it is imperative upon us and the international community to mobilise, expedite and promote an inclusive approach to Iraq's reconstruction."
The statement was read out by the ministry's deputy secretary-general, Kennedy Jawan during the Ministerial Level Meeting at the Kuwait International Conference for the Reconstruction of Iraq (KICRI) on Wednesday.
"We are confident that this conference will produce positive outcomes to assist the Iraqi government restore and rebuild the country and will yield tangible benefits in the everyday life of its citizens."
The statement said the world now faces new challenges to reconstruct and rebuild Iraq as well as to achieve stability and security.
"It must be emphasised that while the reconstruction of physical infrastructure is a priority, the improvement of the wellbeing, the provision of job opportunities and the enhancement of the capacity building of the Iraqi people are equally important.
"Thus, all parties in Iraq must continue to work together towards national reconciliation as this is the key to achieve a balance between Iraq's stabilisation, reconstruction and development plans," said the statement. — Bernama
