SANDAKAN: The Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS) is set to establish smart partnerships with related parties to increase the number of tourists coming to the district.
MPS president Datuk James Wong said the council had held discussions with several parties such as Spring Airlines, Malindo Air and Air Asia as part of the efforts.
He said this was to ensure there was a sufficient number of flights for tourists to come to the district.
"Tourist arrivals via a direct flight from Taiwan on a chartered Malindo Air flight yesterday was a good start for the tourism industry here," he said at the dinner event with Sabah Yang Dipertua Tun Juhar Mahiruddin held in conjunction with the Chinese New Year organised by MPS here, last night.
Also present were Tun Juhar's wife Toh Puan Norlidah Tan Sri R.M. Jasni, Sabah Chief Minister Tan Sri Musa Aman and his wife, Puan Sri Faridah Tusin.
According to Wong, among other plans in the pipeline were to upgrade natural recreational sites with potential to attract more tourists.
He said this involved the gazetting of certain areas as a geological sites, and turning them into new eco-tourism locations.
Taman Tun Razak in Bandar Sandakan for example, would be rebranded into a park with public spaces to conduct more activities, and hence become a popular tourist attraction. — Bernama
