KUANTAN: A housewife suffered losses of RM15,200 after being deceived by her Facebook "friend" allegedly working in Scotland, who promised to send various branded items to her as their friendship gifts.
Pahang Commercial CID chief Supt Mohd Wazir Mohd Yusof said the 54-year-old victim claimed to have became acquainted with the suspect, believed to be a man from Singapore, since last month.
He said the victim claimed that the man told her that he had sent a gift pack containing various items, such as two Apple laptops, iPhone 7 smartphones, a diamond bracelet, handbags and perfumes on Feb 14.
"On Feb 15, the victim said she received a phone call purportedly from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport customs officer named Lia who told her that she had to pay the shipping processing fee.
"The victim then deposited a sum of RM15,200 into the account given by Lia under the name of Devinraj Dennis, but has not received the promised package until now," Mohd Wazir told reporters here today.
He said the victim lodged a police report at the Kuantan District Police Headquarters here yesterday after realising she had been deceived as her attempts to contact the suspect failed.
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code. — Bernama
