KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Community Policing (CP) launched its CP Kejar smartphone application in an effort to combat crime and assist the needy.
Community Policing Malaysia founder and president, Kuan Chee Heng, said CP Kejar was first developed last year and became fully operational this year.
It currently has about 5,000 members from all over the Peninsula.
Kuan, known for his community welfare activities, said apart from being used for the prevention of minor and street crimes, the app, which is free to be downloaded, also allows the public to inform on the location of people who need help through the global positioning system (GPS).
"Our volunteers closest to within five kilometers distance from the scene will come to aid for those in need for immediate assistance.
"The user of the app can also view the movement of our volunteers through their handphone, which is similar to the Uber and Grabcar application systems," he said.
Kuan said that the first CP Kejar volunteers who arrive at the scene will then be rewarded with bonus points by the application operators and the points can then be converted into goods or food vouchers as recognition for their efforts.
"This effort would not overlap or indirectly reduces the dependency on the police especially in the circumstances to prevent crime from happening.
"We target CP Kejar to have 500,000 members nationwide by the end of this year. This app can be downloaded through android PlayStore from now on, while iOS starts next month," he added.
Meanwhile, Crime Prevention Awareness President, Datuk Seri Dr Saharuddin Awang Yahya, said the effort could reduce the crime index drastically if more volunteers were to get involved in helping to fight crime.
