Death of Indonesian maid: Remand order extended against suspect

BUKIT MERTAJAM: The remand order against a 60-year-old suspect in connection with the death of an Indonesian maid who was allegedly abused by two siblings last week has been extended for another week by the magistrate's court here.
The extension was granted by court registrar Nor Hapipah Abdullah from today until Feb 26.
The senior citizen who was arrested last week at Jalan Green Hall in George Town arrived at the court complex at about 9.45am in a police van.
She was arrested on Feb 12 and was remanded for a week to facilitate investigations under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
The remand orders against her two children aged 39 and 36-years-old was extended until Feb 21.
Prior to the extension, they were remanded for four days since Feb 11 after they were arrested a day before.
Adelina died last Sunday while receiving treatment in a hospital in Bukit Mertajam due to alleged abuse by her employers.
Her death triggered outrage from non-governmental organisations and netizens.
It was reported that Adelina had been forced to sleep in the car porch with her employer's dog for over a month, and had also suffered bruises on multiple parts of her body.
The Indonesian authorities have also arrested two individuals on human trafficking charges after establishing a link with the death of Adelina.
