MRT: Our fare among the cheapest in the world

PETALING JAYA: The current fare for the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT), as well as other rail services in the country, are among the cheapest in the world, while offering some of the best infrastructure.

MRT Corp Sungai Buloh-Serdang-Putrajaya (SSP) Line project director Datuk Amiruddin Ma'aris said the public did not find taking the MRT a hassle due to the rather cheap fare they have to pay.

"So far when it comes to the MRT fares, it has never been a deterrence (to the public from using it). It is considerably cheap.
"Based on Line 1 of the MRT which was launched last year, as well as the Light Rail Transit (LRT) and monorail, I would say we are among the cheapest when compared to other countries.
"And bear in mind the quality of infrastructure we (MRT) are providing are first class," he told theSun recently.
He was responding to claims from several critics that the MRT fare could have been cheaper than the present rate.
Amiruddin pointed out that travelling from Sungai Buloh to Kajang via MRT (from one end of Line 1 to the other, spanning 51km) would only cost RM5.50 per trip on a cashless fare system, and RM6.40 via cash.
"Just imagine, you have all the time in the world to do what you want during travel, and whatever balance you may have compared to driving a car, you can eat Satay Kajang Hj Samuri when you alight in Kajang," he said.
On whether the public could expect a fare hike in the near future in anticipation of Line 2 of the MRT (SSP Line), which would be launched in July 2022, Amiruddin said it was ultimately up to the government.
"We propose the fare table, but at the end of the day, the fare that is regulated and implemented is decided by the government, and in this case the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD)," he added.
