Energy Commission seizes 187 ceiling fans with no CoA

PUTRAJAYA: The Energy Commission (ST) seized 187 units of ceiling fans worth RM100,000 that did not have a Certificate of Approval (CoA) in a raid at a warehouse in Ampang, Selangor on Jan 25.
The commission said in a statement today that the largest seizure within five years was conducted following a tip-off from the public.
It said under the Electricity Regulations 1994, all electrical equipment under the control of the commission was required to have a CoA before being manufactured, imported, displayed, sold or advertised to ensure consumer safety.
"After the CoA is issued, the controlled electrical equipment is required to be tested by Sirim Bhd and then labelled with Sirim-ST before it can be sold," it said.
Currently, there are 34 types of electrical equipment under the control of ST including socket, lamp, kettle, oven, refrigerator, water heater, fan and charger, the statement added.
It said the case was being investigated under Section 37 (1) of the Electricity Supply Act 1990 which carries a maximum jail term of five years or a maximum fine of RM100,000 or both, upon conviction. — Bernama
