PETALING JAYA: It is time for the opposition to accept the fact that Malaysia has been successful under the policies drafted by the current government, said Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Salleh Said Keruak.
In his latest blog post, Salleh said the recent praises by the World Trade Organisation (WTO) over the state of the country's economy was a clear indication that Malaysia was currently on the right track.
"Many times the issue of Malaysia's economic achievement was politicised and the rakyat were told otherwise than what actually happened," he said.
"The opposition continues to repeat the lies that Malaysia is bankrupt but international reports have proven that such notions are not true," he added.
Bernama on Saturday reported that 43 WTO members, who participated in a question and answer session at the 7th Trade Policy Review (TPR) of Malaysia in Switzerland, commended the country for its impressive economic achievement, prudent trade and economic policies.
Salleh said Malaysia was praised for its active role in supporting open trade policy, either through a one-way reform, regional trade, bilateral trade and multilateral trading rules.
He added WTO members were also aware that Malaysia's success in renewing and diversifying its economy has contributed to continued growth despite multiple external challenges.
Salleh remarked that implementing economic reform was not easy and could not be done in a short-term period.
"It needs durability, and sometimes an unpopular policy, to achieve its long-term goal especially when trying to correct the damage done in the past," he said.
"However, the international community recognises Malaysia's achievement and they can see that the country is heading in the right direction," he added.
