JAKARTA: Compensation and salary arrears totalling RM63,900 have been paid to the family of Adelina Lisio, the Indonesian maid who died following suspected abuse in Malaysia.
Malaysian Ambassador to Indonesia Datuk Seri Zahrain Mohamed Hashim said the amount comprised the maid's salary arrears from Jan 2015 amounting to RM35,900 and the compensation for the family, including the costs for repatriation and funeral processes.
"The payment was made to Indonesian Consul-General in Penang on Feb 13," he told reporters here today.
Prior to this, the Indonesian media reported that the woman's family was demanding compensation and full settlement of her salary, which had been in arrears for three years.
"Adelina's death was a heartbreaking tragedy. I regret that it happened in Malaysia," Zahrain said.
Adelina, 28, was found with severe injuries, believed to have been abused at a house in Taman Kota Permai, Bukit Mertajam, Penang on Feb 10.
She succumbed to her injuries the following day at Bukit Mertajam Hospital.
Her remains was repatriated for funeral on Feb 19.
Speaking at a press conference attended by many local reporters, Zahrain said Malaysia would not compromise with anyone found guilty in the case.
"So far, three suspects had been arrested on suspicion of smuggling in Adelina to Malaysia. It is believed to have involved a human trafficking syndicate. The Malaysian and Indonesian police will collaborate to solve this case," he added. — Bernama
