More tolls abolished in near future?

PETALING JAYA: More tolls may be abolished in the near future if Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak has his way.
The Prime Minister said he was never a fan of tolls, and vowed that even more toll collections would be reviewed in the coming years, should the Barisan Nasional (BN) government have the means and generate enough revenue.
"My predecessor (referring to Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad) was a great believer in tolls. I do not like them. Which is why the Pan Borneo Highway will not have tolls.
"Now, tolls at Batu Tiga, Sungai Rasau, Bukit Kayu Hitam and the Eastern Dispersal Link have also been abolished. Wherever I can, I will abolish them, because I don't think it's good.
"So, if we have leftovers (from our budget), we will review them," he said during a 2018 Budget sharing session with the rakyat at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre, which was livestreamed on his social media accounts.
In his 2018 Budget tabling in October last year, Najib announced that toll collections at the four aforementioned plazas would cease.
Najib, who is also Finance Minister, said the issue of tolls was a legacy problem created by Mahathir, and promised to unravel some of the earlier decisions made by the former premier which he claimed was not of the interest of the people.
He said he was also not a believer that charging tolls on the rakyat on a daily basis was good, as it would only burden road users and cause more congestions.
"If you're talking about the North-South Expressway or the Karak Highway, then okay, because you only use it once in a while. But anybody would be displeased if you are forced to pay everyday," he said.
