Inquest into death of Vasanthapiriya receives AG's go ahead (Updated)

NIBONG TEBAL: Police have obtained approval from the Attorney-General’s office in Penang to conduct an inquest into the death of Form 2 student M. Vasanthapiriya.
Penang police chief Datuk A. Thaiveegan said the approval was obtained on Monday after the investigation on the matter was completed.
“The date for the inquest will be decided soon”, he said at a press conference after a get-together session with Indian teachers and students from South Seberang Perai at the district police headquarters multi-purpose hall today.
Thaiveegan said the inquest will be an open hearing and more than 30 people are expected to testify.
He added police had done their part by completing the investigation successfully and professionally in accordance with the law.
Vasanthapiriya was found hanging in her room at her house in Nibong Tebal on Jan 24 after she was accused of stealing a teacher’s smart phone.
She was warded at the intensive care unit of Hospital Seberang Jaya and remained in a coma until she died at about 3.30am on Feb 1.
Thaiveegan also handed some financial aid from the police to Vasanthapiriya’s parents R. Muniandy and A. Malaveily.
