Perlis MACC emphasises on three aspects to curb corruption

KANGAR: This year, the Perlis Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will emphasise on three key aspects close to heart of the people in its strategy to curb corrupt practices involving civil servants.
They are enforcement, licensing and procurement by government departments and agencies, including the local authorities.
Incoming state MACC director, SAC Mohd Shukor Mahmud said the emphasis on these three aspects was important to seal any space or opportunity for corrupt practices involving civil servants and the public or other stakeholders, to occur.
"This effort also involves education and awareness among the public and students. We will hold programmes such as GERAH 2018 to get closer to the community, and for them to better understand the role of the MACC," he said.
Mohd Shukor was speaking to the media after taking over as the new state MACC director from Yaacop Angah during a handing-over of duties ceremony at the Perlis MACC headquarters here today. Yaacop retired yesterday.
Mohd Shukor, 49, previously served as an officer in the intelligence department at the MACC Headquarters in Putrajaya.
Meanwhile, Mohd Shukor said the MACC would increase monitoring at the border areas to curb smuggling of firearms and drugs, as well as the influx of illegal immigrants, which included elements of corruption.
"All these issues are very close to the heart of the people. Hence, we want all parties to take responsibility to reject corruption to build a healthy society," he added.
Yaacop, who was appointed Perlis MACC director in January 2014, thanked those who provided valuable information to the commission in resolving several high-profile cases.
He said the drop in tip-offs from the public from 148 in 2016 to 73 last year did not affect efforts to curb corruption.
According to the outgoing state director, the MACC had received nine reports so far this year, with two of them involving civil servants.
On the Corruption-Free Pledge, Yaacob said 44 of the 124 government departments and agencies in Perlis had signed the pledge. — Bernama
