PETALING JAYA: Civil rights activist Maria Chin Abdullah has revealed that she had been approached to contest in the coming 14th General Election (GE14), but said she has yet to decide on the matter.
The electoral watchdog Bersih 2.0 chairman said it was a serious matter still under discussion and that the move was to have her represent the voices of the civil society in Parliament.
"One of the clear aims is to take the civil society agenda for justice, freedom, good governance, free and fair elections and human rights straight to Parliament.
"It is also to support the ongoing struggle there, in partnership with civil society organisations working on the ground," she said in a statement today.
She assured that the public would be informed once she has decided whether or not to contest in GE14.
Maria had been rumoured to contest under the PKR banner, with several reports speculating that she might run either in Batu or Petaling Jaya Selatan held by PKR's Tian Chua and Hee Loy Sian respectively.
She had denied the reports previously.
Former Bersih 2.0 chairman Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan, who Maria succeeded in 2013, is also widely speculated to be a candidate in the coming GE, possibly contesting against MIC president Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam in Segamat.
