RoS asked why Umno granted another year to hold party polls (Updated)

PETALING JAYA: Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) has questioned the Registrar of Societies (RoS) over its double standard approach for granting Umno an extension by another year to conduct its party election.
Umno was supposed to hold its party polls by Oct 19, 2016 but has postponed it to April 19 this year.
PPBM President Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin today said while the RoS was responsible in administrating political parties, its jurisdiction could not supersede the constitution of a party.
He added that the Umno constitution has clearly stated that the party election could only be postponed to a maximum of 18 months.
"Is it true as what the Umno secretary-general (Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor) stated that RoS had allowed for the extension?
"With that extension, is it not against the law and the Umno constitution itself? RoS should answer this," he said in a press conference at PPBM headquarters.
In June 2015, Prime Minister and Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak had announced the postponement of party election, which initially to be held on Oct 19, 2016.
Under the postponement, the party election should be held latest by April 19 this year.
However, Tengku Adnan on Tuesday stated that the party election would be held on April 19, 2019 at the latest, in line with the approval of the RoS.
Muhyiddin said his party was not granted with a similar treatment by the RoS when PPBM was embroiled in a similar predicament regarding its constitution, which could deregister the party.
“When we tried to resolve the issue on PPBM, RoS said we need to follow our constitution.
“The RoS even stated that PPBM would be deregistered if it did not follow the requirement (of the party’s constitution),” he said.
"The RoS should treat everybody equally. This issue is not about political parties but about the constitution and being fair,” he added.
He said since Umno had gone against its own constitution, the question now arose over the status of those in the party’s central leadership.
“What is the status of Umno’s president, his deputy and the Supreme Council members. Do they still hold the positions?” he asked.
