Elephant strays into Sabah school canteen

KOTA KINABALU: Students and teachers of SMK Telupid in central Sabah had a huge shock when an elephant strayed into their school canteen today.
The incident was the second case this year involving elephants trespassing into an inhabited area in the state's Telupid district, said Supt V. Shivananthan, the Beluran district police chief.
He said in the latest incident that took place at about 6am the elephant went into the canteen in search of food, to the surprise of students and teachers.
A police team was subsequently sent to the school to monitor the situation.
On Feb 28, about 10 wild elephants entered the compound of the Beluran police station after the herd broke through a fence.
No one was injured in both incidents.
Wildlife Rescue Unit veterinarian Dr Diana Ramirez, who is part of a team trying to relocate the elephants back into the forest, said they have been trying to keep the herd away from humans and residential areas for the past month.
