GEORGE TOWN: A driver was injured after his lorry overturned at the Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge here earlier in the morning.
Fortunately, there was no severe congestion as the traffic volume on the second bridge was fairly lower compared to the main bridge gateway – the Penang Bridge.
The lorry which was transporting concrete slabs overturned around 9.30am at Km7.9 on the lane bound towards Batu Kawan on the mainland.
Prompt action by the bridge's emergency response team managed to prevent the accident from affecting traffic flow.
Within minutes of the mishap, the team managed to move the lorry towards the emergency lane and recovered the slabs which had fallen onto the lane.
The bridge's deputy corporate communications manager Azizi Azizan confirmed the incident and said that there was no major congestion on the island.
After three hours, the lorry was removed, and the driver who was slightly injured, was sent to the Seberang Jaya Hospital for outpatient treatment.
This is the second major incident in less than three weeks – the first one was about one week ago, where a lorry laden with sand overturned at the first bridge.
The incident resulted in a major traffic congestion and it took the authorities some five hours to clear up the mess.
