Suhakam chairman's ex-driver jailed 36 months, fined RM45,000 for falsifying his cheques

KUALA LUMPUR: A former personal driver to Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) chairman Tan Sri Razali Ismail was reduced to tears when he was sentenced to 36 months jail by three separate magistrate's courts today, on 25 counts of falsifying cheques and misappropriation of more than RM700,000 about two years ago.
Mohamad Faisal Mohamad Sanusi, 31, was also fined RM45,000 in default 45 months' jail and ordered to be given a stroke of the rotan when he pleaded guilty to all the charges.
The sentences were delivered by magistrates Siti Radziah Kamarudin, Mahyudin Mohmad Som and Maizatul Munirah Abdul Rahman.
Mohamad Faisal was ordered to start serving his sentences from the date of arrest on Feb 25.
On the first 24 charges, Mohamad Faisal had forged 24 Maybank and Standard Chartered cheques owned by Razali, 79, the total amount being RM762,706, with the intention of deceiving bank officials with the fake documents.
The offences were committed at the Maybank Ampang Park and Wangsa Maju here as well as Standard Chartered Bank in Jalan Ampang between Aug 4, 2016 and Nov 5, 2016.
All the charges against Mohamad Faisal were made in accordance with Section 468 of the Penal Code which provides for a maximum jail term of seven years and fine, upon conviction.
M. Segaran held a watching brief for Razali.
Mohamad Faisal was also charged with discharging a bank cheque in the name of Razali Ismail worth RM35,000 and he dishonestly misused the money, which he knew was not his.
He committed the offence at the Standard Chartered Bank in Jalan Sultan Ismail here on Oct 31, 2016 under Section 403 of the Penal Code.
Three deputy public prosecutors K. Vasugi, Nur Farah Adilah Noordin and Noorelynna Hanim Abd Halim appeared for the prosecution while Mohamad Faisal was not represented. — Bernama
