KUALA NERUS: For Terengganu weightlifting athlete Azmer Abdul Rahman, his wedding day was undoubtedly a very significant day in his life, and to have Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak to perform the 'tepung tawar' ritual on him and his new bride, definitely takes the cake.
Azmer, 26, and his new bride Norasyikin Nabila Rahimi, 18, were among 111 couples who participated and were feted in the New Terengganu Transformation (TTB) Prime Wedding (mass marriage solemnisation) ceremony held at the Gong Badak Indoor Stadium here today.
Azmer, who won a silver medal in the Sukma 2012 in weightlifting event (130kg) and his new bride Norasyikin Nabila, also a weightlifting athlete who won a gold medal in the Sukma 2016, were visibly overwhelmed when they were selected to represent other couples for the 'tepung tawar' ceremony.
He said he did not expect to be selected to participate in the mass wedding as he was planning to get married in June.
"I knew about TTB mass marriage solemnisation from my foster father because he is one of the employees of the Terengganu Family Development Foundation (YPKT) who told me to fill up the form. 'Alhamdulillah' (Praise to God), here we are," he said when met by reporters after the ceremony today.
Also present were Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman, Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister and Kemaman Member of Parliament, Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek, Deputy Communications and Multimedia Minister and Hulu Terengganu Member of Parliament, Datuk Seri Jailani Johari, and State Secretary Datuk Wan Nawawi Wan Ismail.
The wedding reception, which was in conjunction with the closing ceremony of the Terengganu Expo 2018, was held at the compound of the Gong Badak Sports Complex, here, from Feb 25 until tomorrow. — Bernama
