KUALA LUMPUR: Bersih 2.0 chairman Maria Chin Abdullah has been reminded that joining politics is about serving the people, not political gain.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said she has no issue with civil society leaders entering politics, but indicated for them to focus on the people instead of blaming the government for everything.
Nancy, who is also the Batang Sadong MP, said that in order to be a good politician, Maria should learn from Barisan Nasional (BN) leaders on how to engage and serve the community.
"So if Maria is here to join the opposition, by all means, as long as she serves the people well. To just point fingers at the government alone is not a right thing to do.
"If you compare with BN, we serve the people, we don't go to the constituency and talk about other things and put the blame on other people.
"We really serve the people and we want to serve our constituency to ensure that they are well served … And I hope Maria's cause to join politics is to serve the people well," Nancy added.
Maria had said that she plans to quit Bersih 2.0 and would contest in the coming general election, offering herself to Pakatan Harapan as an independent candidate.
She is expected to announce her decision at a press conference soon.
The veteran social activist is speculated to contest under the PKR ticket in an urban area, presumably Petaling Jaya Selatan, which is currently held by Hee Loy Sian.
Pakatan Harapan are reportedly recruiting social activists, academicians and analysts to stand in the coming general election.
Last week, Wan Saiful Wan Jan, the founder of Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (Ideas) announced his resignation from the think tank, before joining Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia.
He is expected to be fielded in a parliamentary seat in the coming election.
