2017 STPM exam records best CGPA since 2013 (Updated)

PUTRAJAYA: The 2017 Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM) examination achieved a higher Cumulative Grade Point Average of 2.76, the best so far since the introduction of the modular STPM in 2013, it was announced here today.
The 2016 CGPA was 2.71, said Malaysian Examinations Council chairman Prof Datuk Seri Dr Mohamed Mustafa Ishak.
He said the CGPA of 2.76 was a significant improvement in all the criteria used to gauge the achievement.
However, he added, the percentage of candidates who garnered a CGPA of 4.00 dropped by 0.18% compared to 2016.
"A total of 485 candidates of the 2017 STPM garnered a CGPA of 4.00, down to 1.13% from the 565 (1.31%) in 2016," he said when announcing an analysis of the results her.
He said the number of candidates who obtained a CGPA of 3.50 and above increased to 6,408 people in 2017, from 6,137 candidates in 2016.
The number of candidates who garnered a CGPA of 3.00 and above also increased, from 16,263 candidates in the 2016 STPM to 17,423 last year.
"I expect the number of 2017 STPM leavers to be accepted into public universities will be higher following the increase in percentage and number of candidates with a CGPA of 2.75 and above, which is high, at 55.19% from 51.83% in 2016," he said.
Mohamed Mustafa said the number and percentage of candidates who obtained 5As and 4As dropped slightly, from 575 in the 2016 STPM to 521 in last year's STPM.
He said the percentage of candidates who obtained a full pass in five and four subjects increased to 72.02% from 71.88% in 2016.
"This increase shows that the achievement of Form Six candidates in government schools has improved, believed as a result of the implementation of the Form Six Empowerment initiative by the Education Ministry, " he said.
Mohamed Mustafa said in general, all 22 subjects offered in the 2017 STPM recorded a full pass of more than 70% with Grade C and above.
In appreciation of the outstanding achievements of schools with the high School Average Grade, the Malaysian Examinations Council is giving certificate to the best 10 schools for the 2017 STPM, he said.
The schools are Kolej Islam Sultan Alam Shah, Klang, Selangor; Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Tengku Panglima Raja, Pasir Mas, Kelantan; SMK Hua Lian, Taiping, Perak; Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama (SMKA) Sheikh Mohd Said, Seremban, Negeri Sembilan.
SMK Sacred Heart, Sibu, Sarawak; SMK Padang Saujana, Jerantut, Pahang; SMK Kangkong, Pasir Mas, Kelantan; SMA Maarif, Besut, Terengganu; SMK Sultan Ibrahim (2), Pasir Mas, Kelantan dan SMK Tengku Mahkota, Muar, Johor.
Mohamed Mustafa also said the Malaysian Examination Council was also giving, for the first time, special award to five students with the best results in the 2017 STPM.
The special award will be based on the household income of the students' concerned, which is RM930 and below for those in the peninsula; RM1,170 and below for Sabah and Labuan and RM990 and below for Sarawak.
The recipients are Maryam Nurul Izzah Abdul Aziz from SMK Tok Janggut, Pasir Puteh Kelantan; Chee Fong Ting (SMK Sam Tet, Ipoh, Perak); K. Praveesh Rao (SMK Cyberjaya, Selangor); Rafeah Sekan (SMK Putatan, Penampang, Sabah) and Ebelind Min Anak Slanjat (SMK St Augustine, Betong, Sarawak). — Bernama
