BUTTERWORTH: Two accidents occurred on the Penang Bridge today.
The first accident involved a lorry laden with sand that lost control and rammed the side divider of the first Penang Bridge, which smashed parts of the 20-feet long concrete edge of the first bridge on the island-bound side.
Central Seberang Prai district police chief ACP Nik Ros Azhan Nik Hamid said there were no casualties in the 3.30am incident.
The 31-year-old lorry driver sustained minor injuries and was taken to the nearby Seberang Jaya hospital for treatment.
The accident also caused a bumper-to-bumper crawl along the bridge.
After the overturned vehicle was removed, the traffic situation resumed to normal at 9.30am.
Nik Ros Azhan said the case will be investigated under the Road Transport Act 1987.
In a statement released to the media, he said investigations are ongoing to determine if the accident was caused by the driver's negligence or faulty brakes.
This is the second accident involving heavy machinery in two weeks. On Feb 20, a 10-tonne truck laden with sand also caused a massive congestion after it crashed on the bridge divider.
In the second accident this afternoon, a motorcycle collided with a lorry.
The 33-year-old rider is reported to be in a coma while the pillion rider sustained injuries after the motorcycle was dragged for 30m by the lorry.
As a result of being dragged, the pillion rider suffered broken ribs.
A traffic police spokesman said the case will be investigated under the Road Transport Act 1987.
