KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 107 convicted child offenders have been listed in the Child Registry, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.
Deputy Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Datuk Azizah Mohd Dun (pix) said the Child Registry was implemented in tandem with the enforcement of the amendments in the Child Act 2001 to provide information on individuals seeking employment in fields that involved children, such as childminder, hostel warden and canteen operator.
She said information on the child offenders and action taken against the individuals concerned were obtained from the police and would remain in the registry to serve as a reference for interested parties, especially those providing services for children.
"The list of offenders in the registry is confidential and will not be announced or displayed. It is an effort for employers to step up child safety," she said in response to a question from Wong Chen (PKR-Kelana Jaya) on the child registry.
She said the offences were not confined to only sexual crimes, but also other crimes, such as child abuse, using children to beg and neglecting them. — Bernama
