Compensation for student killed by tractor blade to be decided after police investigation
KUALA LUMPUR: The family of a student killed by a flying lawnmower blade last month, has received a Takaful insurance payout of RM5,500, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.
Stating this, Deputy Education Minister Datuk Chong Sin Woon (pix) said the payout was given on Feb 23 at the Sungai Kelana mosque.
On the payout by the contractor involved in the incident, he said the matter would be decided after police have wrapped up their investigations.
He said the investigation has to be completed in order to determine the party who should bear responsibility for the incident.
However, he said that ministerial action against parties involved in the incident would also be carried out soon.
Chong said the ministry has also issued a second circular to schools on strict penalties if the student safety guidelines are not put in place.
Fourteen year old Nur Afini Roslan was killed while her two friends Abdullah Hazlan, 14, and Mohd Farhan Reza Badrol Hesam, 13 sustained light injuries when they were struck by a lawn mower blade in an accident at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Tuanku Abd Rahman in Gemas on Feb 13.
The lawn mower, which was in operation, was being pulled by a tractor when the incident occurred. The three students were believed to have been near the machine when tragedy struck.
The Education Ministry had reportedly said that a special committee will be set up to conduct an internal inquiry on the death of the student.
