KULIM: The body of a woman was found floating in Sungai Kuala Sedim near a sand quarry here today.
The remains of Rafeah Abu Bakar, 72, were discovered around noon by a quarry worker about 6 km from Sungai Kampung Merbau Pulas, where she was said to have slipped into the river late Monday afternoon.
The 40-year-old quarry worker, who wanted to be identified only as Ahmad, said he initially saw something afloat in the river about 11am.
"At first, I thought I saw a pillow and we (my colleagues and I) just ignored it. Somehow, I was called to check again at noon … when I saw the head, that confirmed (my feeling) that it was a body. We immediately told our boss to alert the police," he said.
Rafeah's nephew, Mohamad Sohaime Hussin, said his aunt, who was living alone, did not return home since late Monday afternoon.
"She loved to bathe at the river since a long time ago. However, we (my family) found it weird when her chickens did not return to their hut that day," said the 24-year-old.
Meanwhile, Kulim district police chief Supt Ahmad Nasir Jaafar said the body was taken to the Kulim Hospital for a postmortem.
The case has been classified as sudden death. — Bernama
