Term limit for CMs and MBs if Opposition wins GE: Pakatan (Updated)

GEORGE TOWN: The term limit for the post of prime minister, mentris besar and chief ministers will be limited to two terms if Pakatan Harapan (PH) forms the next government.
Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, who is also the DAP secretary-general, said the PH leadership council has agreed on the matter after an extensive round of discussions.
"We thought that since the prime minister's term was limited to two terms, we should also extend it to the post of chief minister and mentris besar. It is only fair," Lim told a press conference.
As it involves amendments to both the federal and state-level constitutions, Lim said the opposition alliance has to secure a two-thirds majority to implement the policy.
The proposed term limit will not apply to state executive councillors and elected representatives.
Lim said that if PH does not form the next government at the federal level, Penang can pursue the prospects of limiting the term.
He said if such a policy is implemented, it will only be effective after the next election and not for positions held prior to that.
In another matter, Lim said his position as DAP secretary-general is the number one post in the party, dismissing the arguments of Barisan Nasional strategic communications unit deputy director Eric See -To.
See -To had issued a statement that the number one person in DAP is Lim's father Lim Kit Siang in response to Lim's refusal to debate with MCA deputy president Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong on the RM6.3 billion cross-channel undersea tunnel project, which has turned controversial over various allegations.
