KAMPAR: A 48-year-old man who earns a living by collecting recycled items did not allow his poverty to get in his way when he found RM4,000 by the roadside here on Tuesday.
Cheah Keng Keong from Taman Bandar Baru Selatan here who has three daughters and two sons said the money could be for doctor's fees or for an emergency case.
"I am poor but not greedy. I am not sure of the amount of cash strewn but decided to go to police since there was a MyKad and the money will be returned to the owner," he said.
According to him, he rode his motorcycle with his daughter to a petrol kiosk to pump fuel and noticed several RM5 notes at Jalan Batu Sinar opposite Sekolah Menengah Sentosa at 1.20pm.
"I stopped the bike and picked up the money and at the same time I spotted a sling bag with more cash in it and also a wallet.
"I did not count the money and after talking to my daughter we decided to go to the police station to handover the cash," he added.
Meanwhile Kampar police district chief Supt Ng Kong Soon said although he is poor but the financial difficulties faced by his family did not tempt him to keep the cash.
"An act which should be commended ... the owner gave an Ang Pow to me to be handed over to the man.
"We managed to trace the victim a religious school teacher who was asked to come to the station to collect the money and belongings," he added.
