USM lecturer accused of getting job with fake cert

GEORGE TOWN: A 51-year-old man, accused of getting a job as a lecturer at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) for three years by providing false qualification certificate 10 years ago, has claimed trial at the magistrate's court here today.
N. Thevananthan appeared calm in the dock when two charges were read to him.
For the first charge, he allegedly cheated the USM's management and deceived it with a false document to obtain the lecturer's job on Aug, 15, 2008, which is a cheating offence under the Penal Code.
For the second charge, he allegedly used a forged overseas university's certificate, which comes under offence of forgery and using as genuine a forged document under the Penal Code.
Magistrate L. Umma Devi allowed a total bail of RM17,500 for the two charges with one surety.
Police prosecution officer Insp. Siti Hajar prosecuted.
The case has been fixed for submission of documents on April 9.
