CYBERJAYA: Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim today welcomed more women to participate in politics, including former Bersih 2.0 chairman Maria Chin Abdullah.
Speaking after officiating the 2018 International Women's Day celebration, she said it was encouraging that more women were being groomed by their respective political parties to take on more challenging roles.
"We welcome Maria, but don't come in just for political reasons. Come in for something you want to fight for," Rohani said.
Seasoned politicians for their part, must lead by example so that other women will join politics.
"At present, there are a lot of women standing as political candidates in Malaysia and 32.4% of all elected representatives in the Dewan Rakyat are women," she added.
The theme for this year's International Women's Day is #PressforProgress, which aims to unite friends, colleagues and whole communities to think, act and be gender inclusive.
