KUALA LUMPUR: The Umno Welfare Bureau (BiKUM)'s efforts to repatriate two former Malaysian drug mules in Peru is expected to be completed by the end of this month.
Its chairman, Datuk Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah said BiKUM was now waiting for the approval of the permit order by the Peruvian government to enable them to be brought back to Malaysia.
Efforts to bring home Noor Azimah Sapie, 37, and Noor Suzanna Azmi, 35, had been carried out over the past few months with the help of Wisma Putra but took time due to the documentation process.
"Consequently, they are unable to leave the country yet and require special clearance from the government of Peru before returning to Malaysia," he told Bernama here.
Noor Azimah was lured to become a drug mule by her own mother who was involved in an international drug syndicate in Peru. Noor Suzanna was also involved together with another former drug mule, Syzlin Hathaman, 43, and had served a prison sentence in the country but was released a few years ago.
Syzlin died at a hospital in Lima, Peru on Oct 7 after suffering from several diseases including asthma and diabetes. Her body was brought back to her hometown in Larkin, Johor and was buried at the Kebun Teh Muslim Cemetery on Oct 17, last year.
Shamsul Anuar, who is also the MP for Lenggong, said BiKUM's aim to bring back drug mules stranded abroad was not a populist move.
Instead BiKUM had a bigger goal to bring these survivors into the programme to raise awareness among Malaysians about the issue, he added. — Bernama
