Anger over smoking orang utan in Bandung Zoo (Video)

THE Bandung Zoo came under heavy criticism after a video emerged of an orang utan smoking after a visitor flicked a lighted cigarette into its enclosure.

The footage shows the ape puffing away after it was given the cigarette by a man who was standing at the viewing area next to several children.

The zoo staff said a guard at the enclosure could have been on a break at the time of the incident.

"There's actually a sign at the location which says visitors are not allowed to give food and cigarettes to the animals," BBC recently quoted a spokesman from the zoo.

The video was uploaded by Marison Guciano, who is the founder of the Indonesia Animal Welfare Society.

"This orang utan at Bandung Zoo is given a cigarette by ignorant visitors," he wrote in the post.

"Visitors do not know how to deal with animals, but the lack of supervision by zoo management is equally lacking, and is one of the issues which must be addressed.

"Indonesia desparately needs animal welfare standards in its zoos."
