BAU: Sarawak has huge potential to become a major pineapple producer in the country as the fruit is fast gaining popularity among farmers while the Malaysian Pineapple Industry Board (LPNM) is seriously promoting planting pineapple in the state.
Deputy Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Datuk Anthony Nogeh Gumbek said LPNM which began operating in Sarawak in 2010 had provided assistance to about 600 pineapple growers in the state as at the end of 2017 with 2,000 acres of farmland.
According to Nogeh, the government has identified pineapple as the new source of revenue for growers who are serious and committed to the crop.
"Pineapple has huge potential as a lucrative crop," he said when handing over LPNM pineapple planting assistance in Kampung Stenggang here last night.
About 10 participants received assistance in the form of seeds, insecticide and fertiliser worth RM5,500 each. — Bernama
