Tourist guide jailed for theft

PETALING JAYA: A tourist guide was sentenced to a day's jail and fined RM2,500, in default four months' jail, by the magistrate's court here today for stealing RM841.50 worth of items from a supermarket two months ago.
Magistrate Salamiah Salleh handed down the sentence on A. Nakaviran, 31, who pleaded guilty to the charge.
He was charged with stealing the items, which included cloth pegs, kitchen towel and floor cleaner at the Taman Equine Aeon Supermarket, Seri Kembangan here at 4.05 pm last Jan 7.
Nakaviran, who has two children, was charged under Section 380 of the Penal Code which provides an imprisonment for up to 10 years and fine, upon conviction.
The prosecution was conducted by deputy public prosecutor Mary Phoon Keat Mee, while Nakaviran, who was ordered to serve the one day jail sentence today, was unrepresented. — Bernama
