382 cases filed at special Court for Sexual Crimes Against Children

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 382 cases of sexual crimes against children were filed at the Court for Sexual Crimes Against Children since its establishment in June last year.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said of the total, 314 cases had been resolved, while only 68 cases are still pending.
"This numbers show that the cases have been resolved in a short period of time, in less than one year," she said in her reply to Datuk Seri Hasan Malek (BN-Kuala Pilah) during question time at the Dewan Rakyat sitting, here today.
Meantime, she said the government has also looked into several other approaches to improve the service of the court, including the creation of Grade Jusa C posts for judges and a regulation for deputy public prosecutors not to be transferred for at least three years, so that they would gain experience and skills in handling such cases.
Azalina said the launch of the special handbook on (handling) sexual crimes against children, on Dec 13 last year, was also crucial in ensuring fair process of trial.
"This handbook is the only one established in our country's court system ... it will serve as the uniformising guidelines to all parties involved to facilitate the smooth running of the proceedings of cases and to ensure it adheres to the principles of justice," she added. — Bernama
