KUALA LUMPUR: World badminton No 2, Datuk Lee Chong Wei fulfilled expectations when he breezed through to the second round of the All-England Championships held in Birmingham, England on Tuesday (early today, Malaysian time).
The four-time All England champion who easily defeated unseeded player, Ygor Coelho from Brazil, in straight sets 21-15 and 21-17 within 37 minutes, will take on South Korea's Lee Dong Keun.
According to the tournament website, http://bwf.tournamentsoftware.com, should Chong Wei advance from the second round, he is expected to battle his nemesis, China's Lin Dan, or Wang Tzu Wei of Taiwan in the quarter-final.
The 36-year-old Malaysian has won the All-England Championships which offers a total prize of USD1 million (RM3.9 million), in 2010, 2011, 2014 and 2017.
Following in his footsteps are national men's doubles, Ong Yew Sin and Teo Ee Yi, who took an hour to down Indonesians, Fajar Alfian-Muhammad Rian Ardianto, in 21-16, 16-21, 23-21.
A tough challenge awaits the Malaysian duo when they meet world number one doubles, Marcus Fernaldi Gideon-Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo of Indonesia who had easily beaten teammates Angga Pratama-Rian Agung Saputro in straight sets 21-16 and 21-19 in the first round.
However, luck was not with German Open Championship mixed double winners Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai when they were forced into an early exit in the first round by the host's husband-wife pair, Chris Adcock-Gabrielle Adcock, who won straight sets in 21-14 and 21-15. — Bernama
