Lamborghini's Super SUV premieres

AFTER its global premiere Automobili Lamborghini’s headquarters in Sant'Agata Bolognese in December, Lamborghini’s SUV, the Urus, was presented to the media today, marking its first appearance in Malaysia. Touted as the world’s first Super Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV), the Urus “carves a new niche for the brand in the luxury segment, setting new benchmarks across performance, driving dynamics and design”.
The Italian company said that the Urus was built upon a visionary approach that combines the Lamborghini DNA with the most versatile vehicle, the SUV. “It also elevates the SUV to an unprecedented level – to be a Super SUV – with its power, performance, design, driving dynamics as well as daily usability in a range of environments.”
Since Lamborghini has a history of naming their cars after famous Spanish (so-called “fighting”) bulls, the name comes from the Urus, the ancestor of modern domestic cattle, also known as the aurochs. Although the Urus is not technically a fighting bull, it is still very close to those Spanish bulls in appearance.
The four-seater Urus features a 650hp, 850Nm of maximum torque (from 2,250rpm) 4.0 litre, 32-valve, V8 twin-turbo engine, making the super SUV one of the highest specific power outputs in its class and the best weight-to-power ratio. The car accelerates from zero to 100km/h in 3.6 seconds, 0-200km/h in 12.8 seconds and with a top speed of 305km/h, which also makes it among the fastest SUVs in the world.
Its other features include eight-speed transmission, four-wheel-drive system, rear-wheel steering, six driving modes (which include sand, off-road and even snow), carbon ceramic brakes and 21-inch to 23-inch wheel options, among its very long list of specifications, options and extras. There’s no official price yet for the Urus, but Automobili Lamborghini Southeast Asia area manager, Davide Sfrecola, told us yesterday that without tax, the Urus goes for “below one million ringgit”.
