Singaporean gets 16 years jail and 18 strokes of rotan for raping own mom

SINGAPORE: A 33-year-old man was sentenced to 16 years in jail and 18 strokes of the rotan at the High Court here yesterday for raping and molesting his mother.
The accused who was not named to protect the victim's identity committed the act on his mother, then 53, in the wee hours of Oct 4, 2013.
In a case that drew the ire and disgust of the public, the accused had said "I liked it" when questioned by his mom why he had committed such an act on her.
'Boy' as the man is called in the family worked as a safety coordinator and is the second of three sons from the victim's previous marriage.
At the time of the incident, the victim was sleeping alone in her room as her husband who runs a hawker stall was out working.
In laying down the judgement Judicial Commissioner Foo Chee Hock said that the case raised "two disturbing questions": If a mother would falsely accuse her biological son of raping her, and if a son would rape his mother.
The accused, during the course of the trial, had the temerity to accuse his mother and stepfather of conspiring to accuse him of rape in a bid to get him out of the house, whilst always maintaining that he was innocent.
The prosecution team who were led by Deputy Public Prosecutors (DPPs) Sharmila Sripathy-Shanaz and Sruthi Boppana said that the man's defence was a meek concoction of stories to explain away the truth of what happened.
"He has been demonstrably economical with the truth," DPP Shamila said.
She demanded the harshest possible punishment for what she termed as a heinous act of crime.
DPP Sharmila said: "For all the vastness of the English language, there is simply no word that comes even remotely close to capturing the horror that would have washed over the victim as she was cruelly and relentlessly sexually assaulted by the very son she gave life to 30 years earlier."
A psychiatrist from the Institute of Mental Health who testified in the case said that the victim suffered from an acute distress disorder caused by the attack.
