GEORGE TOWN: The state government has contributed RM50,000 to the Assumption Church under the Places of Religious Worship other than Islam (RIBI) fund.
State executive councillor for housing, town and country planning Jagdeep Singh Deo said there are 99 applications approved under the RIBI fund.
Since 2008, the Penang state government has provided funds amounting to RM30 million and allocated land to places of religious worships other than Islam.
Jagdeep said the Chief Minister has already contributed a sum of RM200,000 to the Assumption Church renovation project, and another sum of RM50,000 was allocated to the church from the RIBI fund.
"As this is a new project for this church, I am happy to announce that their application for further financial assistance under the RIBI fund has been approved on March 12, namely for the maximum sum of RM50,000," said Jagdeep.
He said the fund was set up on Sept 9, 2015, with the amalgamation of the RIBI contribution fund under both local councils, City Council of Penang Island (MBPP), and Seberang Perai Municipal Council (MPSP).
"This RIBI contribution is paid by developers to both the local authorities, in lieu of them physically providing RIBI plots in their development," said Jagdeep.
He said the Penang state government will continue to assist Places of Religious Worship other than Islam that are undertaking maintenance projects and building new buildings under this fund.
