SPAN to set up committee to investigate water disruption in Sungai Selangor (Updated)

CYBERJAYA: The National Water Services Commission (SPAN) will be setting up a special investigation committee to investigate the water disruption incident at the Sungai Selangor Phase 3 (SSP3) water treatment plant last week.
SPAN chairman Datuk Liang Teck Meng said the committee will be made up of three commissioners and headed by SPAN recruitment and services committee chairman Datuk Lim Chow Hock.
"Syarikat Pengeluar Air Sungai Selangor (Splash) is expected to submit its own initial assessment report by March 23.
"We will now wait for their submission before the committee can begin its investigations," he told reporters at the SPAN headquarters, here, today.
Denying allegations by certain parties that SPAN did not do its job throughout the water disruption period, Liang said the commission had identified problems at the SSP3 plant at the end of January.
"We initially detected a reduction of the treated water production from the average 820 million litre per day (mld) to 795mld.
"On Feb 5, SPAN visited the plant and conducted an audit on the pump systems before issuing a letter to Splash on Feb 15 asking them to immediately start repair works at the plant," he said.
He also called on the Selangor government to stop politicising the water issue by making false claims such as sabotage against the federal government.
"Two years ago Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Azmin Ali pointed his finger at the federal government during the (Sungai) Semenyih (water treatment plant) issue.
"(At present), SPAN has yet to receive any filings to back those allegations," he added.
Residents throughout Klang Valley and other parts of Selangor suffered dry taps for almost a week following a water disruption exercise due to critical equipment repairs at the SSP3 plant on March 6.
The initial scheduled 10-hour water cuts turned into days when the surge vessel system at the plant burst just before water supply could be resumed.
