GEORGE TOWN: The inquest into the death of Form 2 student M. Vasanthapiriya will be conducted on March 30, said Penang Criminal Investigation Chief Dato Zainol Samah.
He said the date was given after the state attorney general (AG) office approved the application by the police.
"The case has been referred to the state coroner judge who has fixed March 30 for the inquest," he said in a statement today.
Zainol said the inquest will be conducted at the lower court in Southern Seberang Prai.
Last month Penang police chief Dato A. Thaiveegan said the state AG office has given the go-ahead for the inquest to be conducted.
It was learnt that more than 30 witnesses will testify in the inquest which will be conducted in an open court.
Vasanthapiriya was found hanging in her room at her house in Nibong Tebal on Jan 24 after she was accused of stealing a teacher's smartphone.
She was warded at the intensive care unit of Hospital Seberang Jaya and remained in a coma until she died at about 3.30am on Feb 1.
